Totem by Scott English

This Totem popped up once in a dream I had. So thin at it’s base, and so monstrous at its apex that it wobbled with the teasing of even a slight breeze. Initially the thought of having a Totem to watch over me was comforting.

Then I peered closer at the spirits painted and carved into the wood. Discovering an eclectic gathering of wildly coloured freaks and weirdo’s, I was no longer so reassured.(Unfortunately the wild colours didn’t stick hard enough to my memories to make it out of my dream intact, hence the mono-coloured drawing).

With friends like this, perhaps I didn’t need enemies?

At least one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles took time out his busy crime fighting schedule to personally appear on my log of guardian wood.

Wow, thats neat looking. I wonder what that dream means. Is that a Mexican wrestler on the right?

Hmm..maybe the fact that you’re disturbed by the images is a good thing…it means its making you consider, think, and examine. Not every part of our souls are comforting. We have lots of dark dangerous stuff inside of us… This looks like your subconscious saying “Hey, we’re here, we’re a part of you…what you do with it is up to you.”

*shrug* I think its cool that you can remember your dreams in enough detail that you could draw the image afterwards. I dream a lot, but as soon as sunlight hits my brain, the images disappear.

Kelly: I am wondering if it meant that I drank a extra beer too many before going to sleep… I am not sure about actually being a wrestler, though I had pictured it as some sort of Mexican-like visage. Perhaps if you see a Mexican wrestler, it is a mexican wrestler.

Lori: Thanks for stopping by. I’m not really sure how much examining I have really done of the dream image (outside of the dream - which itself is pretty vague now)… I am a little dubious about an image like a totem, which is supposed to be a protective symbol traditionally, serving as a vehicle for the dark stuff inside of me… seems a little confused there… but then again, I honestly have no better interpretation myself, and I do find your suggestion interesting.

I often remember the visual parts of my dreams when I remember them at all. Often they are like fractured silent movie reels where the spoken word is really more felt then heard and all the other senses are pretty much non-existant.
