I’m putting the ball in your hands. Your challenge is to tell me about some thing (or things), that will enrich my life. I’m not going to give you Tell Me What I Am Missing Out On In My Life completely free reign though… so you don’t have to wonder to yourself “But Scott, where do I even begin”? I am going to take some of the hard work out of it for you and narrow it down to some specific areas: Music. Books. Movies. Computer Games. Blogs.

So here’s what I want from you. I want you to recommend to me one example from any or all of those categories that you think I would enjoy/would move me/would make me think/or have some otherwise decent impact on me. But that’s not all. I want you to tell me why you are recommending it to me, and if you’ve got the time, let me know what sort of effect it had on you. That is, give me a reason to take you up on your recommendation.

For example, say that you were going to recommend a genre of music to me, yeah? Say Neo-Fusion Rockabilly, right? Don’t just say Neo-Fusion Rockabilly. Tell me why. Otherwise, knowing not a skerrik about Neo-Fusion Rockabilly, I’m not going to have the foggiest idea where to start, and likely just discard the whole thing and move on.

So you have your marching orders, should you choose to accept them. Tell me about Music, Books, Movies, Computer Games and/or Blogs that I should experience. I’m counting on you to add a little something something to my life.

Wait wait wait, before you go scurrying off into the comments, why don’t you consider asking your own blog readers (if you have a blog), to do the same for you. You never know, they may just have a few gems that you would never have discovered before if you had not asked. And if you do post asking them this same question, make sure you leave a link to the post in the comments here as well. That way, I can stop by. I may even have a suggestion or two of my own to add.

Music: Im not sure there is much in the way of music I haven’t already shared with you.

Books: I’m going to go with the Harry Potter series. For a children’s series, the books are well written and the plots are interesting. The subplots and humor are sometimes subtle and sometimes in your face, but its always entertaining. Its every kids dream, to find out you have magical powers.

Computer Games: The Longest Journey. This is my favorite adventure game of all time. I really connected with the character, and I love the science/fiction/fantasy type feel to the plot. It’s long and challenging, but not frustrating. The graphics were good for the time, and when you finish it’s more like you read a great story than just played a game.

Blogs: No suggestions. The only blogs I read are yours, livejournal, and a bulletin board called flyertalk (and that one relates to my job).

I want you to slow down and relax. As soon as the weather is fine, get that hammock out and enjoy the beautiful grass and lack of weeds in your yard. Can’t believe how great it looks. Get a tall glass of something cool and refreshing, and maybe a snack and an interesting book (I know you have some) and play whatever music you enjoy, and kick back and know that we love you and want you to be happy. Smoochies and Hugs.

Music: Metal bands with girl singers. I love the dichotomy between heavy music and light vocals, particularly when there are also double bass drums. I used to think it was kinda gay to like harder bands that had female vocals. Now I don’t care so much. Check out Nightwish, “Once” or Flowing Tears, “Razorbliss”

Books: “Surely You’re Joking, Mr Feynman” has to have been one of the biggest influences a book has ever had on me. Conversational in tone, it chronicles pieces of the life of Richard Feynman, a Nobel Prize winning physicist. Laugh-out-loud funny at times… he was, indeed, thinking differently.

Computer Games: Titan Quest. I was a huge, huge Diablo / Diablo II fan, and it’s like the developers took all that was good from those games and made things better. Then, with the expansion, better again. Lots of little UI niceties, like a button to filter out all the useless dropped items you don’t care about. And the bad guys you fight drop exactly what it is they’re using against you - which is comforting when some low level beastie was kicking the crap out of you for no apparent reason… oh, he had the Flaming Uber Sword of Player Killing Doom Death. Sweet, now I do.

Blogs: Eh. I have to read them for work. Every. Freaking. Day. Bunch of whiny, self-absorbed, narcissistic, redundant idiots, the lot of them.

Max: That sounds incredibly good. I am making my way through the great books you have lent me recently… I am still trying to get everything else to fall into place in order to fulfill that picture perfect setting of relaxation that you described, but Rome wasn’t built in a day. Thank you so much for being there for me during a troubling time. Equally the same to Geo and GMom!

cwp: Thanks for stopping by mate. Lets see what you’ve suggested there…

Metal bands with girl singers: Generally I have found that female singers don’t really have the presence of voice to hold there own when surrounded by the sounds of the instruments in that type of music. Sure, I can see a certain dichotomy, but if they’re drowned out but come across weak as a result, I don’t see the point. Still I’ve put both Nightwish - Once, and Flowing - Tears - Razorbliss into the “rotation” on my Launchcast station, so hopefully I’ll get a chance to hear them soon and see what I think.

“Surely You’re Joking, Mr Feynman”: Having some knowledge of your personality, and having read the blurb on this title, I can’t say that I am surprised by your recommendation. The book does look like a good read and quite interesting, I will definitely keep an eye out for it.

Titan Quest… hmm checked out some gameplay videos and it look like a blast. I am surprised that this game was never on my radar. And the thought that the bad dude you just killed actually drops what it was using… wow, about bloody time ;) Will also keep an eye out for this one.

Thanks for the recommendations mate. Much appreciated!
