I find it interesting to reflect that sometimes I make bemused fun of people whom have things that I do not, if not loudly, certainly in my internal dialog. Probably stems from a deep-seated jealousy.

Most recently, I have been noticing more and more people walking around with those earpieces with which they can talk on their cell phones hands free.

I would giggle about how dorky they looked, or comment on what posers they were – so important that they had to ponce around in public with their fancy little earpiece on the off chance that someone would call them while they nipped into the convenience store for a packet of chips and a drink.

Of course, I wanted one of those dorky little earpieces myself.

A couple of weekends ago I got my wish. My mother-in-law, whom enjoys giving gifts so much that she will practically invent reasons to give them, gave me one of those dorky little earpieces because I had to work the first day of the Labor Day weekend.

I finally got around to setting it up yesterday, and it was surprisingly easy.

My Motorola Bluetooth Handsfree Headset by Scott English, Copyright 2007

It does have a real name besides “cell phone earpiece thingy” – it is a Motorola Bluetooth Handsfree Headset.

Of course, just as I suspected would happen, I have yet to receive a call while I am wearing it. I have however graced my answering machine with a call that I made from it. Despite the “I don’t really sound like that, do I?” factor, and our cruddy machine, the sound quality was good.

Of course, now that I have one of these Motorola Bluetooth Handsfree Headsets, I no longer think they look dorky. I also walk around with it on all the time like a real poser that is so important that I might actually get a call while I am filling up with gas. It has not happened yet, but it might.

Now it is other people’s turns to make bemused fun of me. Fair enough.

Those things always kind of remind of the Borg, particularly Seven of Nine.

Now when you are walking down the street talking to yourself, you can blame it on the ear piece.

Okay, I’m going to start calling you at random times just to see if I can catch you with the ear on. You are right about the surprising sound quality. I was doubtful, but it was fun to call Elaine one Saturday when I had a long drive to make and know the call was free and my hands were also free! lol And she said I sounded crystal. Too cool.

…I no longer think they look dorky.

Oh, but they do!

They make me think of robot cockroaches that would like to eat brains. I’ll never wear one of those killers.

Kelly (crickie): The borg look cool, except that they do not seem like they have seen much sun for a while. Probably too much time crammed into that cube. You’d think the collective would be all for some shore leave on a nice sunny planet occasionally.

Me, talk to myself? I would never do a thing like that. Would I? I don’t know. I don’t think that I do? Do I? Now I am all self conscious. Yes me too. What about you? Yep, self conscious as well. We’ll have to be careful about what we say now. People are watching apparently. And LISTENING. Agreed? Agreed. Agreed. Agreed.

Mom: I am not sure that your plan worked!

Chickie: This robot cockroach is probably slowly eating away at my brain every time I use it. When it’s done, and I am just a shell of a man, it will probably take up residence and start posting about how cool these earpiece thingies are, in order to perpetuate its species.

Ummm…
